Nashville park oddball

Over the years I have mastered the art of multi-tasking. My brain and my hands often were doing two different things, although I was probably less than successful at either of the competing tasks.

Now, I have taken multi-taking to the extreme. I don't know why I have chosen to do this since I now have more time to single task than any other time in my life, but once you start multi-tasking it is hard to stop.

Now my day begins with a morning walk. The purpose of the walk was exercise, but of course there are so many more things you can do while walking. Rather than simply exercise-walk, I figured I would also walk the dogs at the same time. Barb and I have a good routine. I walk both dogs at a fast clip, while Barb walks behind with the two poop bags ready for action.

Now I thought the daily exercise/dog walks would fulfill the multi-task need, but I was wrong. Twenty years after the rest of the universe, I decided to purchase a MP3 player. I figured I could put on it the songs I had to learn for the barbershop chorus I joined. However, I learned it is not easy to listen to music on a MP3 player without singing along - which I do ... loudly ... while exercise/dog walking. I try to tone it down if there are others walking in the park, but with those earbuds in you can't always tell how loudly you are singing ... and you also can't tell when people are approaching from behind. The looks I get are quite interesting.

As the info-mercials say, "But wait, there's more." Last week I was introduced to the choreography that went along with the songs we sing in the barbershop chorus. Now as I am exercising and walking the dog and singing I find myself side-stepping and knee-dipping as I rehearse the choreographed moves. But it is when my "jazz hands" fly up and frame my face that I find Barb is ready to fling those dog-poop filled bags at me in embarrassment.

Just call me the Nashville park oddball!

First time to check your blog, I will be back!!! I always enjoyed your columns in the Times, so I was not disappointed. Good idea of practicing your music as you walk, makes for some good stamina and of course breath control. I used to do that, but then I haven't been walking lately. As to those people who stare, just stare back at them. Maybe they will want to go with you to rehearsal to see what it is all about.
